Tripura’s Aritra Roy Creates History by Conquering Mount Everest

In a proud moment for the northeastern state of Tripura, Aritra Roy, a 35-year-old IT professional from Badharghat, Agartala, has become the first person from Tripura to scale Mount Everest. He reached the summit of the world’s highest peak at 7:31 a.m. Nepal time on May 19, 2025, marking a historic achievement for the state and the nation.

What makes Roy’s feat even more remarkable is his unique triathlon challenge — he cycled over 1,400 kilometers from Agartala to Phaplu, Nepal, and later completed a marathon before beginning his Everest ascent. This makes him the first Indian to combine cycling, running, and mountaineering in a single expedition.

“This journey was not just about climbing Everest, but about pushing the limits of what’s possible,” said Roy.

A Journey of Grit and Determination

Roy’s expedition wasn’t without obstacles. Mechanical failure in his bicycle gear due to poor road conditions in Assam nearly disrupted the journey, but help from Border Security Force (BSF) personnel ensured he continued without delay.

At Camp 4, at 8,000 meters, he was forced to wait for over 24 hours due to harsh weather and strong winds. Despite the risks, Roy persevered with the help of his Sherpa guide, Karma Sherpa, who ensured a safe ascent and descent.

Support and Future Goals

Roy received immense support from Assam Rifles, who provided technical training, accommodation, equipment, and logistics throughout his mission. Grateful for their help, Roy said their backing made his journey safer and more manageable.

Tripura Tourism celebrated his accomplishment on social media, sharing a powerful image of Roy at the summit proudly holding the Tripura state flag.

Having already climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa) and Mt. Elbrus (Europe), Roy now eyes Mt. Aconcagua (Argentina) as his next challenge in his goal to complete the Seven Summits — climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents.

“I want to show that even someone from a small state like Tripura can dream big and achieve it,” Roy added.
